Free Christmas Day bus services in Brighton & Hove Surprising increase in ridership

This year, Brighton & Hove Buses again offered Christmas Day services at no cost to taxpayers, with more than 4,300 residents utilizing routes 1, 1A, 5B, 7, 12, and 49. This marks a 46% increase in usage compared to last year’s figures.

Additionally, a new service was introduced on the Coaster Route 12 between Brighton, Newhaven, and Seaford, attracting nearly 600 passengers.

These services, funded commercially, are part of Brighton & Hove Buses’ ongoing initiative to facilitate access to work, social visits, and friend gatherings during the Christmas season. Notably, driver participation is entirely voluntary, with this year seeing a surplus of volunteers over available shifts.

Nick Hill, Commercial Director at Brighton & Hove Buses said: “We’re thrilled to be able to run Christmas Day services again this year and to see even more people using them. We’re committed to keeping everyone connected all year round and making it easier for passengers to get to where they need to be at Christmas.”

On New Year’s Eve, a normal Sunday service will be in operation with night buses running to get people home in the early hours on routes N1, N5, N7, N12, N14 and N25.
