A man has been found guilty of killing an elderly pensioner in a shocking robbery in Manor House earlier this year.

Tragic Attack on 87-Year-Old John Mackey

John Mackey, 87, was viciously assaulted on Goodchild Road at around 5:53pm on Tuesday, 6 May. The thug robbed him of his shopping before leaving him so badly injured he died in hospital two days later on 8 May.

Peter Augustine Found Guilty at Old Bailey

Today, 58-year-old Peter Augustine from Green Lanes, Hornsey, was convicted of Johns murder at the Old Bailey.

“I hope that Augustines conviction is a small reprieve for the family of John,” said Acting Detective Chief Inspector John Marriott, who led the investigation. “It is a shameful tragedy that John was killed by Augustine for a mere few bits of shopping. He deserved better.”

CCTV Footage Cracks the Case

  • Just two days after the attack, police arrested Augustine after CCTV showed him stalking John following his visit to a local shop.
  • The footage captured Augustine buying dinner at a kebab shop before launching the savage attack and stealing Johns bag containing a newspaper, cornflakes, cottage pie, and his meal of sausage and chips.
  • Augustine was caught at a nearby hotel. In custody, he showed zero remorse, hurling threats and even throwing hot coffee at an officer.
  • During police interviews, Augustine denied involvement, claiming, “I aint killed nobody, mate,” but detectives saw through the lies and charged him with murder and robbery on 9 May.

After a two-week trial starting 3 November, Augustine was found guilty on all counts. He is set to be sentenced at the Old Bailey on Friday, 28 November.
