X (Formerly Twitter) Suffers Major Outage as Thousands Report App and Website Crashes

X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter, has experienced a major outage, leaving tens of thousands of users unable to access the app or website as of 1:30 PM on Saturday, May 24.

According to Downdetector, over 12,000 reports were filed in the UK alone, while more than 25,000 users in the United States also confirmed experiencing issues with the platform.

Owned by billionaire Elon Musk, X has faced recurring technical disruptions since his $44 billion acquisition of the platform in October 2022, which included mass layoffs affecting around 80% of the workforce.

Outage Details

  • Start Time: Around 1:30 PM, May 24
  • Reported Issues: App crashes, timeline loading failures, and login errors
  • Impact: Users in Europe, North America, and Asia

User Reactions and Ongoing Issues

Users turned to other platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and Reddit to vent frustrations, with hashtags like #TwitterDown and #XOutage trending briefly before also becoming inaccessible via X.

One UK user wrote on Instagram: “X just crashed again — second day in a row. What’s happening?”

This marks the second major disruption in less than 48 hours.

X’s Response

As of now, no official statement has been released by X or Elon Musk, though internal sources suggest technical issues linked to server maintenance or backend instability could be the cause.
