Longtime EastEnders fans were in for a festive surprise during the soap’s Christmas Eve episode as Nigel Bates made his return to Albert Square for the first time in nearly three decades.
During his original run, Nigel’s storylines included his tragic romance with Debbie Tyler (Nicola Duffett), who was killed in a hit-and-run, and his touching friendship with Dot Cotton (June Brown), who saw him as the son she never had.
At school, Nigel was best friends with Phil and Grant Mitchell (Ross Kemp), a connection that will be explored further in his comeback storyline.
The 69-year-old actor expressed his excitement about reprising the role:
“I’m thrilled and honoured to be back as Nigel. Despite it being such a long time ago, I still get recognised as Nigel in the street. Returning has been great as I’m so familiar with many of the faces at EastEnders, and they are a very friendly bunch.
“It’s fantastic to work with Steve McFadden again – I’m a huge admirer of his work, and he sets the bar really high. I’m having a really good time.”
The soap’s executive producer, Chris Clenshaw, teased the intrigue surrounding Nigel’s return:
“There’s a lot of mystery about Nigel’s situation and why he’s here alone, which will be revealed in the coming weeks. Phil has never needed support more than he does this Christmas, so we’re excited to reunite these two old friends.”
Fans can expect emotional moments and revelations as Nigel and Phil’s relationship takes center stage during the festive period.
The Christmas Day episode of EastEnders will air on BBC One and BBC iPlayer at 7:30pm.
