Ministry Of Defence And Veterans’ Charities Join Forces For 80th Anniversary Of Normandy Landings

In a bid to honour and commemorate the 80th anniversary of the historic Normandy Landings, the Ministry of Defence has announced its collaboration with veterans’ charities and memorials. The significant event, which will take place on 6 June 2024, will place veterans of the Normandy campaign at the heart of the official commemorations.

Veterans who took part in the Normandy Landings are encouraged to register their interest in attending the events by contacting the Royal British Legion. This unique opportunity will allow them to be an integral part of the commemorative activities, as communities come together to pay tribute to those who made the ultimate sacrifice during the operation.

On 6 June 1944, the United Kingdom, the United States, and their allies launched a joint naval, air, and land assault on Nazi-occupied France. This marked the beginning of a relentless and costly campaign to liberate northwest Europe from the clutches of the Nazis. The allies successfully established a foothold along the French coast, leading to their ultimate victory over the Nazi regime a year later.

For the first time in history, the British Normandy Memorial located in Ver-sur-Mer, Normandy, will serve as the host for major anniversary commemorations of D-Day. The memorial, which received partial funding from the UK Government, was officially inaugurated by President Macron of France and former Prime Minister Theresa May during the 75th anniversary celebrations in 2019.

Additionally, commemorative events will be held at the Bayeux War Cemetery, managed by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission. This cemetery serves as the final resting place for 4,144 British and Commonwealth service personnel who lost their lives during the Normandy Landings.

The Ministry of Defence will also provide support for the traditional anniversary service at Bayeux Cathedral, ensuring that the significance of the occasion is upheld.

As June 2024 approaches, members of the Armed Forces will take the lead in organizing and conducting the commemorations. Veterans, alongside special guests, will gather to honor and remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice in the fight for the liberation of Europe during the Second World War.

These events aim to bring the United Kingdom and its allies together, fostering a deep sense of remembrance and renewal as we reflect on our shared history. It provides an opportunity for nations to recommit to working collectively in safeguarding peace and security in our present times.

Recognising the importance of inclusivity, the campaign of events, tributes, and broadcasts surrounding the commemorations will ensure that the entire nation has the opportunity to pay their respects to the fallen heroes of D-Day.

Further details regarding the upcoming commemorations will be announced in due course, allowing the public to prepare and participate in this momentous occasion.
