Northallerton Man Sentenced to Eight Years for Child Exploitation Crimes

John Gary Carney, a 69-year-old resident of Prospect View in Northallerton, has been sentenced to eight years in prison at York Crown Court. Carney pleaded guilty to over 20 charges, including making and possessing indecent images of children, voyeurism, and sexual assault on a child.

The case against Carney began in January 2022, when North Yorkshire Police received a report involving disclosure from one of his victims. Investigators subsequently raided Carney’s home, uncovering an extensive collection of evidence, including footage of Carney sexually abusing a young girl on multiple occasions. He reportedly enticed the victim by offering vapes, vodka, and cigarettes in exchange for the abuse.

Carney’s criminal activities extended beyond the direct abuse. He installed hidden cameras in a bathroom to record girls and women using the facilities and taking showers, further violating their trust and privacy.

Initially, Carney denied the allegations, attempting to discredit one of his victims by claiming she was troubled and dishonest. However, he later made partial admissions, describing his actions as merely “foolish.

Detective Constable Jason Roper, who led the investigation, described the evidence as “incredibly disturbing.” He stated that the recordings “clearly show the extent of his vile offending.” DC Roper welcomed the eight-year sentence, noting that it reflected the severity of Carney’s crimes.

The detective also praised the victims for their bravery throughout the investigation and expressed hope that the sentencing would provide some closure for those affected by Carney’s actions.
