The Rt Hon Stephen Doughty, Minister of State for the UK Overseas Territories, has arrived in the British Virgin Islands (BVI) for a two-day visit focused on governance reforms, financial transparency, and shared priorities, including climate change and security. During his visit, Minister Doughty will engage with government officials and community stakeholders to assess progress on critical reforms and discuss ongoing partnerships.
The minister’s agenda includes meetings with Premier Honorable Dr. Natalio Wheatley, Leader of the Opposition Honorable Ronnie Skelton, members of the Virgin Islands Government, and senior public officials. His discussions will center on the implementation of governance reforms, transparency in financial services, and the overall progress of the Commission of Inquiry recommendations aimed at bolstering accountability and promoting sustainable governance practices.
In addition to governance and security, the minister will discuss the UK government’s commitment to tackling climate change and protecting natural ecosystems in collaboration with its Overseas Territories. As part of this agenda, he aims to build on the existing partnership with BVI in addressing climate resilience and conservation.
On his arrival, Minister Doughty expressed his commitment to the partnership with BVI, stating, “Our new UK government is committed to working in partnership with the elected governments and Governors of the Overseas Territories on shared priorities and responsibilities, ranging from governance and security to climate change and nature.”
He emphasized the importance of fully implementing the Commission of Inquiry’s recommendations, adding that these reforms are essential to ensure sustainable governance and lasting positive impacts for the people of the British Virgin Islands.
