Firefighters Smash Down Door to Rescue Kids Home Alone in Gosport Blaze
Emergency crews from Gosport and Fareham rushed to a dramatic fire in Bridgemary tonight. Three fire engines arrived at a Turners Avenue semi-detached house shortly after 8.40pm, after reports of people trapped inside.
Sledgehammers Used to Break In
Firefighters had to smash through a locked front door with sledgehammers to gain entry. Inside, they found a small fire burning on the stairs but quickly brought it under control.
Two Young Children Left Alone with Dozens of Dogs
Neighbours revealed the shocking scene – two children, aged six and nine, were home alone with 26 dogs and several puppies. One resident said the kids’ mum was at work during the fire.
Father Detained by Police
The children’s middle-aged father returned to the scene shortly after firefighters got inside. He was detained by police and taken to Fareham station for questioning.
Kids Unharmed, Now in Neighbours’ Care
Paramedics checked the youngsters, who were thankfully unhurt. They are currently being looked after by worried neighbours.
Authorities have sealed off part of the road. Scene of Crime and Arson Task Force officers are investigating, including examining a bath towel found on the grass outside the house. RSPCA inspectors also attended, concerned about the welfare of the animals.
A Hampshire Fire and Rescue spokesperson confirmed crews worked alongside police at the scene and investigations are ongoing.
