Two-Year Sentence for Brutal One-Punch Attack in Alton

Tyler David Gard, 26, from Winstreet Close in Alton, has been locked up for two years after pleading guilty to causing grievous bodily harm. The Winchester Crown Court sentenced him on 3 March for a savage attack that left a man fighting for his life.

Violent Attack on High Street

Just after midnight on 26 July 2020, Gard followed a 24-year-old victim down Alton High Street following an argument. Without warning, he punched the man, who fell and smashed his head on the curb.

The victim was rushed to hospital and placed into an induced coma. Doctors didn’t expect him to survive.

Life-Changing Injuries

Despite a grim prognosis, the victim has made some recovery but faces permanent disability from the head injury. Gard handed himself into police later that day.

Police Warning: One Punch Can Destroy Lives

Detective Sergeant Dan Hunt said: “This act of violence very nearly resulted in the death of a man. The victim will likely be permanently disabled, and he and his family live with the consequences every day.”

“One split-second decision can cause lasting damage. The message is simple: one punch can be devastating.”

“If caught in a confrontation, stop, think, and walk away. This sentence should reassure the public that offences like this won’t be tolerated.”
