Grime star Skepta, 43, has beaten drug-driving charges after a police roadside test picked up cannabis smells in his car. The court ruled there wasn’t enough proof to convict Joseph Adenuga, clearing the rapper of all offences.
Stopped for Reckless Driving, Smell of Cannabis
On May 14, 2024, Thames Valley Police pulled over Skepta’s Mercedes-Maybach in High Wycombe. Officer PC Talan O’Neill spotted the rapper driving recklessly, overtaking on the outside lane and speeding above the 30mph limit. The officer immediately noticed the strong smell of cannabis inside the car. Skepta was given a roadside drug test at 10:54am, which supposedly came back positive for THC.
Expert Doubts THC Presence – Case Dropped
Skepta pleaded not guilty from the start. At High Wycombe Magistrates’ Court, District Judge Arvind Sharma scrutinised the evidence. An expert witness admitted she couldn’t confirm the samples taken from Skepta contained THC. With this uncertainty over the test’s accuracy, the judge had no choice but to toss the case and declare Skepta not guilty.
Earlier Speeding Charge Also Dropped
That wasn’t the only court drama for Skepta. He also faced allegations of speeding his Rolls-Royce Phantom at 37mph in a 30mph zone back in November 2023. But prosecutors didn’t push the case, and the judge dismissed the charges. With both charges dropped, Skepta walks free with his record clear. The grim artist can now focus on his music career without legal clouds hanging over him.
