Gov Launches Fuel Tanker Weight Limit Consultation
The government is asking the public whether fuel tankers should be allowed to carry heavier loads. The move aims to boost the UK’s fuel supply chain and keep pumps topped up.
Full Tankers, No Bigger Trucks
- Proposal to let tankers operate at full capacity without adding larger vehicles on roads
- Routes for heavier tankers must be pre-approved to ensure the roads can handle them
- Safety features like vehicle stability systems and advanced emergency brakes are part of the plan
The consultation ensures fuel keeps flowing to forecourts and depots, while preventing bigger, clumsier trucks hitting UK roads.
Backing Up the Fuel Supply Chain
This consultation comes after ongoing efforts to strengthen vital supply chains and keep the country moving smoothly.
- Boosting HGV driver tests to get more lorry drivers on the road
- £52.5 million invested in roadside facilities and secure lorry parking
- A record 29,384 HGV tests conducted between March and May 2022 – a 54% jump compared to pre-pandemic levels
As a result, fresh HGV drivers are passing their tests in record numbers, helping to ease driver shortages and support the haulage sector.
