RNLI Rye Harbour Rush to Rescue Stranded Yacht

Just before 7pm on Sunday, January 29, HM Coastguard sprung into action, calling RNLI Rye Harbour after a 27ft yacht got into trouble off Jurys Gap. The response was lightning-fast. By 6.58pm, the Atlantic 85 lifeboat was speeding towards the sea, ready for action.

Yachtsman Unwell as Engine Fails

RNLI crew soon found the yacht, named Dutch Courage, struggling with engine issues. “The lone sailor was feeling unwell,” said crew member Rob Jennings. “With worsening conditions, he was relieved to see us. I went aboard to help and set up the tow, staying on board with him.”

Safe Return to Rye Harbour and Quick Repairs

The lifeboat towed Dutch Courage back up the river to Rye Harbour, where the skipper was taken indoors for tea, biscuits, and a warm-up. The fault? A broken fan belt. Time was tight as low tide threatened to trap the yacht with its keel – but the rescue went off without a hitch.

Deputy Launching Authority Praises Teamwork and Speed

DLA Neil Jolly praised the Rye Harbour crew’s professionalism and swift response: “They’ve trained hard through the winter and showed it tonight. The turnout and speed were brilliant. It’s fantastic to see everyone working together and saving lives at sea.”

In any coastal emergency, call 999 and ask for the Coastguard or contact them on VHF Channel 16.
