Fake ID, real Rolex – and a twist

A 23-year-old Italian man tried to pull a fast one at a Singapore watch shop. Using a fake ID under the name “Deepak Singh,” he sold what he thought was a counterfeit Rolex GMT SARU. But here’s the kicker – the watch was legit. Instead of cash, he walked away with three genuine Rolexes worth around S$90,000 (£52,335 or $70,605).

Shop owner’s suspicion sparks police chase

The shop owner wasn’t convinced. A closer look at the serial number and case quality raised red flags. When the man ignored calls, the owner tipped off the cops. Singapore police snapped into action, arresting the suspect within three hours at Changi Airport as he tried to flee.

Real Rolex, fake fraud? The bizarre verdict

Shockingly, the Rolex Service Centre confirmed every part of the watch was authentic. The man had bought it from a friend who warned him the serial number looked dodgy – but it was just worn down. The intended scam backfired spectacularly.

“His intent to scam the shop, combined with the fake ID, was enough for a seven-month jail sentence,” police said.

Even though he dealt in a genuine Rolex, his bogus identity and plan to trick the shop sealed his fate. The question remains: will he keep the three Rolexes or forfeit them when he’s released? Either way, this seaside scam misfire is comedy gold.
