The United Kingdom is preparing for a bitter cold snap as freezing fog and sub-zero temperatures are forecasted to engulf the country. The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) and the Met Office have jointly issued an amber Cold-Health Alert (CHA) for the North West, North East, and Yorkshire and the Humber regions.
The alert, which came into effect at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, November 28, is expected to remain in place until midday on Tuesday, December 5. During this period, the entire UK is expected to experience frigid conditions, with temperatures plummeting as low as minus eight degrees Celsius.
As the week progresses, frost and wintry showers are anticipated, posing additional challenges for residents. A spokesperson from the Met Office cautioned, “Frost is developing through Wednesday evening, becoming widespread overnight. Icy stretches will persist as snow showers continue, accompanied by patchy rain across the southwest of England, turning to snow over the Moors.
Thursday is set to bring continued cold weather, with snowfall predicted across the Moors in the southwest and wintry showers along coastal areas.
Into the weekend, cold conditions are expected to persist on Friday, with wintry showers and freezing fog patches. The Met Office’s outlook for Friday to Sunday also indicates the likelihood of sunny spells on Saturday, along with wintry showers, primarily affecting coastal regions.
The outlook further mentions, “Staying cold throughout this period, with sunny spells and some wintry showers, mainly towards coastal areas. Widespread overnight frosts and some freezing fog patches.”
While milder conditions are anticipated to develop by the end of the week, bringing cloudier and windier weather with rain outbreaks, the possibility of more settled spells with temperature drops, frosts, and fog patches remains. However, these are expected to be brief, as areas of rainfall are likely to follow.
As the UK braces for this bout of extreme cold, residents are advised to take necessary precautions to stay warm and safe.
