Man Dies After Police Chase at Colindale Tube
The Metropolitan Police have been informed by the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) following the tragic death of a man at Colindale Underground Station.
Police Called to Fight, Incident Turns Fatal
Officers rushed to the scene around 1am on Sunday, 19 May, after reports of a fight and criminal damage outside Colindale station. When police arrived, a man spotted them and fled into the station. Officers chased and tried to detain him inside, but he ran onto the tracks and was fatally injured.
Investigation and Family Support Underway
The British Transport Police (BTP) are now investigating what happened and are supporting the man’s family during this difficult time.
The IOPC was alerted as police had contact with the man before his death, per mandatory rules. After reviewing officers’ bodycam footage, the IOPC decided no formal investigation was needed and handed the case back to the Met. The Met’s Directorate of Professional Standards also concluded no further probe was necessary.
BTP officers have kept the family updated on the IOPC’s decision and the internal assessments.
Police Statement
“This is a tragic incident, and our thoughts are with the family of the man who very sadly lost his life,” said Superintendent Lorraine Busby-McVey, responsible for Barnet policing. “We thank the IOPC for their swift work in reaching this outcome, which is helpful to all involved. Our BTP colleagues will now continue their investigation, with officers providing statements to assist.”
The BTP investigation is ongoing as authorities try to piece together the full chain of events leading to this unfortunate death.
