Tornado Alert Issued for London with 55mph Winds and Hail

A tornado alert has been issued for London and surrounding areas as the Tornado and Storm Research Organisation (TORRO) forecasts possible isolated tornadoes, thunderstorms, and hail. The alert extends across most of the South East, South West, and parts of East Anglia, with strong winds of up to 55mph expected.

The yellow severe weather warning, issued by TORRO, comes as the UK braces for another round of unsettled weather. The organisation highlighted a potential for isolated thunderstorms accompanied by gusty winds and hail, possibly reaching 1cm in diameter. There is also a risk of cloud-to-ground lightning in some areas.

One or more small-scale circulations may evolve, although model guidance differs somewhat on the exact morphology,” TORRO said in their weather update. “Gusty winds, hail, and occasional cloud-to-ground lightning may accompany the stronger cores.”

The alert also mentions the possible formation of “mesolows,” which are highly localised areas of low pressure that can increase the likelihood of tornadoes. These mesolows could lead to a “focussed risk corridor” for tornadoes and gusty winds in affected areas.

According to TORRO, approximately 36 tornadoes occur annually in the UK, often affecting localised areas with intense weather conditions. While these tornadoes are generally not as powerful as those seen in the United States, they can still cause significant disruption.

The Met Office has also issued a weather update, warning of strong winds and potential disruptions later in the week. The forecast indicates heavy rain and wind gusts reaching 27mph in London, significantly lower than TORRO’s prediction of 55mph gusts.

For today and tomorrow, Londoners can expect overcast skies with some sunny intervals. Temperatures will reach a high of 18°C in the afternoon, dropping to a low of 13°C.

Authorities are urging residents to stay vigilant and keep an eye on local weather alerts. People are advised to secure outdoor items, stay indoors during severe weather, and be cautious if travelling.

This weather alert comes shortly after parts of England experienced their wettest September on record, with several flood warnings in place across London, including near Heathrow Airport, due to high tides.

Residents are encouraged to follow updates from both TORRO and the Met Office for any changes to the forecast and further alerts.
