Man Jailed for Life Over Savage Redbridge Murder
A brutal killing in Redbridge has ended with a life sentence for 48-year-old Marius Ziugzda. The homeless man was tossed behind bars on Thursday, 13 February, at Wood Green Crown Court for the savage murder of 60-year-old Brian Shields.
Gruesome Attack in Orchard Playing Fields
Ziugzda was convicted on 17 January following a tense two-week trial. The court heard how on the night of 20 October 2022, he unleashed a violent assault on Brian — who he had been living with in a disused pavilion. The victim suffered multiple punches or kicks, causing fatal blunt force trauma to his head and chest.
Emergency services raced to Orchard Playing Fields (formerly Goodmayes Park Extension) at 11:14am that day but could do nothing. Brian was found unresponsive and pronounced dead on the scene.
Confession, Lies and CCTV Expose Killer
Police quickly zeroed in on Ziugzda, who oddly admitted, “I killed him today, I don’t know what… my friend, in the morning I killed him, now…” before breaking down. Officers noted scratches on his hands.
During questioning, Ziugzda tried to backtrack. He claimed he left briefly to buy water and returned to find Brian dead. But 10 hours of CCTV shattered his story. Footage revealed red stains on Ziugzda’s trousers—later confirmed as Brian’s blood. Neighbours also reported loud, aggressive shouting between two men around 11pm.
Justice Served After Community Shock
Detective Sergeant David Brooks of the Met’s Specialist Crime Command said: “Despite Ziugzda’s claims that he and Brian were friends, he subjected him to a sustained and ultimately fatal attack. This verdict is a testament to the hard work of the investigation team, the numerous witnesses who came forward, and the efforts of the wider police team.”
Ziugzda was formally charged with murder on 23 October 2022. He will serve a minimum of 18 years behind bars for his vicious crime — a grim reminder of the devastating violence lurking in our communities.
