Sussex Police Launches ‘Stronger, Safer, Crawley’ Initiative to Deter Crime
In a significant push to bolster community safety, Sussex Police, in collaboration with various partners, have launched innovative schemes in Crawley, marking a notable step in their ongoing efforts to deter crime and strengthen local policing.
Over two action-packed days, the Crawley Neighbourhood Policing Teams introduced the ‘engagement pod’ in High Street alongside the initiative ‘Stronger, Safer, Crawley’. This strategic move aims to enhance police visibility in the area, serving as a deterrent to potential criminal activities and as a base for operations targeting serious and organized crime within the town center.
Highlighting these efforts, a major operation took place on Friday, 26 January, as part of the Neighbourhood Policing Week of Action. Sussex Police joined forces with Trading Standards, HM Revenue & Customs, the South East Regional Organised Crime Unit (SEROCU), Crawley Borough Council, and specialist search dogs to inspect seven premises in Crawley for illegal tobacco, counterfeit vapes, and other fraudulent goods.
The operation led to the seizure of thousands of pounds worth of illegal cigarettes and vapes, including items suspected of being fraudulently traded, illegally imported, or posing health and safety risks. Additionally, a concealed stash containing £10,000 was discovered and seized by officers. Running concurrently, the ‘Stronger, Safer, Crawley’ operation saw both plain-clothed and uniformed officers patrolling the area, resulting in 11 stop searches and the confiscation of Class A and Class B drugs.
Further extending their community engagement, on Tuesday, 31 January, the engagement pod opened its doors to partners and the public. This initiative, supported by Sussex Police and West Sussex County Council’s Community Safety Team, provided a unique opportunity for residents to interact directly with officers, PCSOs, and county council staff, allowing them to voice concerns and seek advice on safety issues.

Heavy Police Presence and Arrests during BHAFC vs CPFC Match
A police operation was in effect on Saturday, as rival football teams Brighton & Hove Albion FC (BHAFC) and Crystal Palace FC (CPFC) faced off at the Amex Stadium. Sussex Police later reported that an officer was injured before the match commenced, a result of a pyrotechnic device thrown near Brighton Station. Thankfully, the officer did not require hospital treatment and is currently recovering.

A Sussex Police spokesperson commended most fans for their conduct but lamented the actions of a disruptive minority. “Officers responded as necessary, and any individuals caught committing offences will be dealt with robustly,” the spokesperson added.

East Grinstead Indecent Exposure Incidents: Suspect Apprehended
Police are seeking information from the public after several related incidents of indecent exposure in East Grinstead.
In January, there were reports of four distinct occurrences on London Road, Institute Walk, King Street, Christopher Road, Sandy Lane, and Moat Road, involving a man behaving oddly before exposing himself.
Officers have apprehended a 35-year-old man from the area on charges of indecent exposure. He has been bailed while the investigation continues.

Dispersal Order Activated in Chichester City Centre
Expect more police patrols in Chichester due to a recent uptick in incidents.
Following a surge in crime and anti-social behavior reports since Monday, 29 January, authorities have implemented a dispersal order in the city center under Section 34 of the Anti-Social Behaviour Crime & Policing Act 2014.
This 48-hour order, initiated at noon on Friday, 2 February, and concluding at noon on Sunday, 4 February, empowers police officers and designated staff to disband individuals exhibiting anti-social conduct. Non-compliance with the order may lead to arrest.
During this period, an increased police presence will be noticeable throughout the town center.
Chief Inspector Will Keating-Jones, District Commander for Arun and Chichester said: “Sussex Police take a zero-tolerance approach to crime and anti-social behaviour. We believe this order is necessary to protect the community due to an increase in offences, predominately committed by young people, over the last week.
“We, as a team, have a commitment to keep the residents of Chichester city centre safe.
“We are also urging the public to get in touch if they have been affected by this behaviour this week, or witness anything suspicious this weekend.”

In a move to enhance public safety, Brighton has seen the installation of two life-saving bleed control kits, a crucial step in the fight against serious injuries, especially those resulting from knife crime. These kits, strategically placed in West Street and at The Level, are designed to prevent catastrophic blood loss, a leading cause of death in traumatic injuries.
The initiative, funded by Sussex Police and the Sussex Violence Reduction Partnership (VRP), is a collaborative effort with Project Youth, a Community Interest Company (CIC) committed to diverting young individuals from knife crime. This partnership underlines a proactive approach to community safety and youth engagement.

These experts will instruct on whether to seal, wrap, or pack a wound, ensuring prompt and effective first aid even before the arrival of ambulance services.
The kits, easily identifiable and accessible, contain essential medical supplies such as dressings, chest-seals, tourniquets, gloves, and scissors. Clear instructions are also provided inside the door of the kit for quick reference by any member of the public, facilitating immediate action in critical situations.
Sergeant James Ward from the Brighton Neighbourhood Policing Team emphasized the strategic placement of these kits in high-risk areas, noting previous incidents of serious violence and knife crime. He expressed the collective hope that these kits would remain unused, but acknowledged their importance as a protective measure for the public.
Brighton’s commitment to public safety doesn’t stop here. Plans are underway to install four more kits across the city in the coming months. Additionally, six kits will be distributed to night-time venues, further extending the safety net for residents and visitors during evening hours.

Tragically, Emma was found deceased near the Eastbourne coast around 1.10pm on Wednesday. A spokesperson for Sussex Police confirmed the discovery, stating that the body of the 45-year-old woman was identified as Emma.
The circumstances of her death are currently not being treated as suspicious, and her family has been duly informed. The police have extended their sincere condolences to Emma’s loved ones during this extremely challenging time.

20-Year-Old Man Dies after Ovingdean Cliff Fall, Sussex Police Confirm
Emergency services, including Sussex Police, South East Coast Ambulance Service (SECamb), and a Kent, Surrey, and Sussex Air Ambulance (KSS) Rapid Response Vehicle, were dispatched to Ovingdean at approximately 2 pm on Thursday following reports of an individual falling from the cliffs.
Upon arrival at the scene, the first responders discovered a man in urgent need of medical attention. He was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment. At the time, Sussex Police provided limited information, stating only that the man had been hospitalised and that no additional details could be disclosed.

A spokesman for the police expressed condolences and confirmed that the deceased’s family had been informed of the tragic outcome.

Eastbourne Introduces Night Safety Marshals For Ensured Public Safety
Eastbourne is stepping up its efforts to ensure public safety during night-time activities with the introduction of a new team of Night Safety Marshals. Starting, Friday, January 26, these marshals will be a visible force in the town centre, focusing on quick responses to emerging issues and providing additional support to ensure a safe night out for everyone.
This initiative is a collaboration between Sussex Police, local partners, and the Brighton-based Pagoda Security. The marshals have undergone rigorous training, specializing in identifying and aiding vulnerable individuals. Their role is to complement the extensive safety measures already implemented by Sussex Police and other agencies.
The introduction of the Night Safety Marshals in Eastbourne follows their successful implementation in Brighton and Crawley. The expansion of this program has been made possible through funding secured by the Sussex Police and Crime Commissioner, Katy Bourne, via the Safer Streets Fund. This fund is dedicated to addressing neighborhood crime, violence against women and girls, and anti-social behavior.
The marshals will be on duty from 8pm to 4am on Friday and Saturday nights, patrolling key areas of Eastbourne town centre. They will work closely with the police, Street Pastors, Security Industry Authority (SIA) door staff at licensed venues, and members of the Business Crime Reduction Partnership (BCRP).
Equipped with advanced training in handling vulnerable situations, the marshals can swiftly identify and respond to those in need, directing them to appropriate support services or escalating issues to the police when necessary. Additionally, they will maintain direct radio communication with the police, ensuring any incidents are promptly reported.
Inspector Sarah Taylor, of the Eastbourne Neighbourhood Policing Team, said: “Protecting our community from violence and crime, particularly during the night-time economy, is a key priority for police. Everybody has the right to enjoy a night out and Eastbourne is, and will continue to be, a safe place to do this.
“We already have a range of measures in place to support this work, including dedicated cars and targeted patrols under our Project WAVE (Wellbeing and Vulnerability Engagement) initiative, and close partnership working with licensed premises to promote other safety schemes such as Ask for Angela.
“The Night Safety Marshals are a very welcome addition to our town centre and will further support our work to protect vulnerable people and catch offenders.”

47-Year-Old Man Apprehended in Brighton Magistrates’ Court After Breaking and Entering
Fernando Montoya, 47, residing on Grand Parade in Brighton, was apprehended during the early hours of Tuesday morning after breaking into Brighton Magistrates’ Court. Montoya forcefully smashed through glass panels at the entrance, setting off alarms, and was swiftly detained by security. Police subsequently arrested him.
A Sussex police Spokesperson told Sussex news “Fernando Montoya, 47, of Grand Parade in Brighton was arrested in the early hours of Tuesday morning (January 23) after breaking into Brighton Magistrates’ Court.
He smashed through glass panels at the entrance of the building, triggering the alarms. He was then quickly apprehended by security and arrested by police soon after.
Montoya appeared at court on Wednesday (January 24), charged with criminal damage. He pleaded guilty to the charge and has been given a community order and ordered to pay £200 in compensation.”

St Leonards Man Convicted of Child Sexual Assault
Darren Sibley, a 40-year-old construction worker from St Leonards, has been sentenced to a prison term exceeding 15 years for the sexual abuse of a young girl.
The series of assaults, which targeted a child under the age of 13, occurred from 2011 to 2016. The abuse was exposed when, in 2020, a friend of the victim courageously reported Sibley’s actions to the Sussex Police.
Following the report, officers reached out to the victim, initiating an investigation supported by specialists in the field.
Sibley was apprehended and faced multiple charges, including five counts of sexual assault of a child under 13, two counts of causing or inciting a child to engage in sexual activity, and one count of attempted sexual assault of a child under 13. He also faced charges for assaulting an emergency worker and failing to surrender to custody.
During the trial at Hove Crown Court on October 24, 2023, Sibley was convicted of three sexual offences. He admitted guilt to the assault on an emergency worker and to failing to surrender.
On January 8, at Lewes Crown Court, the court imposed a 15-year and three-month prison sentence on Sibley. Additionally, he was subjected to an indefinite Sexual Harm Prevention Order to significantly reduce the risk of reoffending. A restraining order has been issued to protect the victim, and Sibley will be registered as a sex offender for life.
