A major fire has broken out in a historic three-story building in Weymouth town centre, prompting a large-scale emergency response.

Dorset & Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service (DWFRS) was called to the scene at Dorset Burger Company on King Street at 07:38 GMT on Saturday. The building, a former eye hospital dating back to 1871, was engulfed in flames as 60 firefighters battled to contain the blaze.

Road Closures and Transport Disruptions
Authorities have closed King Street and are urging the public to avoid the area. Access to Weymouth Railway Station is restricted, affecting travel plans for many commuters.

Bus services have also been impacted, with operator Damory confirming that the CR8 route will face disruptions for most of the day due to road closures.

Massive Emergency Response
Fire crews from multiple stations, including Weymouth, Dorchester, Portland, Bere Regis, Maiden Newton, Wareham, Bridport, Charmouth, and Yeovil, have been deployed to tackle the blaze.

A no-fly zone for drones has been imposed over the area until further notice.

Public Urged to Stay Away
A spokesperson for DWFRS has advised people to stay clear of the affected area while emergency teams work to bring the fire under control. The cause of the fire remains unknown at this stage.
