The Asda supermarket in Biggin Hill was temporarily closed this morning after a strong smell of fuel prompted safety concerns. Witnesses reported seeing fire engines outside the store, leading to speculation about a potential fuel leak.
According to local residents, the closure occurred earlier today, with one witness, Paige Reeves, stating,
“I saw earlier this morning it was closed with three fire engines, was opened but closed again with fire engines there.”
Despite the disruption, the issue appears to have been resolved, as the store has since reopened. Nat Williams confirmed the situation on social media, stating,
“There was a possible fuel leak, so they had to close it. But back open now.”
Customers reported that the smell of fuel, initially thought to be from a possible leak, caused the brief closure. However, it seems the situation was quickly brought under control, and normal operations resumed.
One customer, Suzanne Rhule, verified the reopening, stating,
“We are here now, it’s not closed. Just filled up with petrol.”
No injuries were reported, and it remains unclear what specifically caused the fuel smell. The London Fire Brigade has not yet released an official statement, but there are no ongoing safety concerns, and the Asda store is fully operational.
Residents made light of the situation on social media, with some humorously suggesting that the smell was due to fuel deliveries or even a “hazardous breaking of wind” during refueling.
The incident highlights the importance of public safety measures and quick emergency response in situations that might pose a risk to customers and staff. As of now, the store is open for business, and no further issues have been reported.
