In a heartbreaking incident, an eight-year-old boy has died after he was pulled from the River Arrow in Alcester, Warwickshire, following difficulties in the water.
Joshua Hillstead, from Maypole, Birmingham, tragically lost his life due to complications from drowning, Warwickshire Police confirmed. The accident occurred late Monday evening around 9:30 PM when police received reports of a child falling into the river behind Kingfisher Way.
Emergency services, including police, fire, and ambulance crews, were quick to respond to the scene. Joshua was retrieved from the water and immediately received first aid and CPR. Another child was also in the water but managed to get out without requiring further medical treatment and was safely returned home.

Joshua was urgently transported to Birmingham Children’s Hospital in a serious condition where he later succumbed to his injuries. Detective Inspector Heidi Twynham expressed deep sorrow over the tragic loss, stating, “Losing a child is devastating, and our condolences go out to the family. We are currently providing support and urge the public to exercise caution around water bodies, which can be unpredictably dangerous.

This tragedy has prompted reminders about the hazards of rivers, particularly for children and those who are not strong swimmers. Local authorities and emergency services are urging everyone to be cautious around waterways, which can have fast-moving currents and unexpectedly deep sections.
Community and emergency responders have been praised for their rapid and coordinated response, though the outcome remains a somber reminder of nature’s potential peril.
The community of Maypole and surrounding areas have been left in mourning as they come to terms with the loss of such a young life in such tragic circumstances.
