Nestlé is sounding the alarm after a truck carrying a whopping 12 tonnes of KitKat bars – that’s 413,793 individual bars – vanished en route across Europe. The stolen vehicle had left a factory in central Italy, destined for Poland, before it was hijacked. Now, both the truck and its choc cargo are nowhere to be found.
Where Did the Great KitKat Caper Happen?
The chocolatier kept tight-lipped on the exact location of the theft, only confirming it happened somewhere between Italy and Poland. This leaves a wide swathe of potential hotspots: Austria, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, or even Germany, Slovenia, and Hungary, depending on the route taken.
Nestlé’s Response: A Sweet Warning
“We’ve always encouraged people to have a break with KITKAT – but it seems thieves have taken the message too literally and made a break with more than 12 tonnes of our chocolate,” Nestlé joked. But the company also stressed the seriousness of cargo theft, calling it an “escalating issue” that’s getting more sophisticated.
They’re working closely with local authorities and supply chain partners, with investigations underway. Thanks to unique batch codes, stolen bars are traceable – anyone scanning them will get instructions to contact Nestlé.
Easter Shortage? Chocolate Crime Wave?
Nestlé warned the theft could spark shortfalls just ahead of Easter, with chocoholics facing missing KitKats on shelves. But the question remains – do criminals really know what they nicked? Could there be more than just sweet treats in that truck? Disney’s “Los Pollos Hermanos” style conspiracies, anyone?
As the story unfolds, eyes will be peeled for these stolen bars popping up on black markets or dodgy stores. And we’ll be watching to see if this choc smash-and-grab will hike up KitKat prices worldwide. Now that’s one tasty crime spree!
