A significant wildfire has erupted between Llanwonno and Ferndale in Rhondda Cynon Taf, prompting urgent warnings from emergency services and concerns over public safety and critical infrastructure.

The blaze, which broke out earlier today, is currently spreading rapidly across mountain terrain and is visible for miles, with large plumes of smoke drifting into surrounding communities.

A spokesperson for South Wales Fire and Rescue, referencing recent similar incidents, said:

“Crews have been pretty non-stop over the past week with multiple wildfires reported, and this latest outbreak only adds to the strain. Every fire presents a new set of risks, particularly when near sensitive sites like former coal tips.”

Coal Tip Safety Concerns

The blaze comes just days after Rhondda Cynon Taf was allocated over £11.4 million from the £34 million Welsh Government fund to improve safety at coal tip locations—a legacy of the region’s mining past. There is concern that the fire may compromise either the stability or access to these sites, threatening to undermine the safety upgrades before they are completed.

Experts have warned that wildfires can damage monitoring equipment and cause instability in the terrain around disused tips, potentially posing long-term risks to nearby communities.

Recent Wildfire Surge in Wales

The Llanwonno-Ferndale fire is the latest in a string of wildfires across Wales, including a 20-hectare blaze at Mynydd Gelliwastad Mountain near Clydach earlier this week. Emergency services are urging the public to remain vigilant and report any signs of smoke or fire as soon as possible.
