A 36-year-old man has been charged after a black Suzuki Swift ploughed into pedestrians in busy Derby city centre, seriously injuring seven people on a packed Saturday night.

Chaos Erupts on Friar Gate

Sandhu Ponnachan, from Alvaston, was arrested just seven minutes after the smash at around 9.30pm last Saturday. Friar Gate, crowded with pubgoers and diners, turned into a scene of horror as the car hit multiple pedestrians.

Emergency services rushed to the scene. Seven victims were rushed to hospital with serious injuries. Four have since been discharged.

Serious Charges Laid

Ponnachan now faces six counts of causing grievous bodily harm with intent, one count of attempted grievous bodily harm, dangerous driving, and possessing a bladed article. He remains in custody and is due to appear at Southern Derbyshire Magistrates Court tomorrow.

Police confirmed Ponnachan is originally from India but has lived in the UK for several years.

Investigation Underway as Community Reacts

“This incident has sent shockwaves through Derby and the county,” said Chief Superintendent Emma Aldred. “My thoughts remain with the injured, their families, and witnesses. We thank everyone who assisted our investigation. While today’s charges bring reassurance, our inquiries continue.”

The Crown Prosecution Service confirmed enough evidence has been gathered to press charges. Derbyshire Police are working alongside Counter Terrorism units but maintain an open mind on motives. The incident is not being treated as terrorism at this stage.

Police Urge Witnesses to Step Forward

Officers say there is no ongoing public risk but are appealing for anyone with photos, videos, or information to come forward and help the investigation.

Images circulating show injured people lying on the pavement and road. Victims were taken to Royal Derby Hospital and Queen’s Medical Centre in Nottingham.
