Young Heroine Honoured

Eleven-year-old Carmela Chillery-Watson has smashed records by becoming one of the youngest people ever awarded an MBE, according to the Government. The youngster received the prestigious honour in the King’s Birthday Honours list for her incredible charitable work.

Raising Funds Against the Odds

Carmela battles a rare muscle-wasting condition that affects only one in a million children worldwide. Diagnosed at just three years old, she has since helped Muscular Dystrophy UK raise over £400,000 through about 25 fundraising and awareness campaigns.

Speechless and Proud

After receiving her award at Windsor Castle, Carmela said she was left “speechless” on opening the letter. “I never would have thought that I would have got an MBE, I just wanted to do what I did to change communities,” she said. “But this is absolutely incredible. I just never would have thought this would have happened in a million years.”

Record-Breaking Honour

The Government believes Carmela is the youngest-ever MBE recipient, though they admit historical records aren’t complete enough to confirm this with absolute certainty.
