A large-scale blaze has completely destroyed a thatched cottage in Poulner, Ringwood, with more than 50 firefighters and 10 fire engines battling the flames overnight.

The fire broke out late on Saturday evening, prompting a swift and extensive emergency response. Crews from both Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service and Dorset & Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service were on scene throughout the night, working together to bring the blaze under control.

Despite their efforts, the historic thatched property has suffered catastrophic damage, with photos from the scene on Sunday morning revealing partial collapse and smouldering remains.

Firefighters Remain on Scene

As of Sunday afternoon, two fire engines remain on-site, continuing to monitor and damp down hotspots, with the fire still smouldering in areas. An investigation is now underway to determine the cause of the fire.

Incident Commander: ‘A Devastating Loss’

Group Manager Jim Couch, who led the incident response, said:

“Last night we were alerted to a fire at a thatched cottage in Poulner, Ringwood. Ten fire engines and over 50 firefighters were swiftly on scene to tackle the blaze. The cause of the fire is still being investigated.”

“Thanks go to our colleagues from Dorset & Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service, who worked with our crews throughout the evening to get the fire under control. There has unfortunately been significant damage to the property. It’s a devastating loss for the residents, but thankfully there were no injuries.”

Warnings for Other Thatched Property Owners

Couch also urged local residents to review fire safety guidance for thatched homes, noting that such fires can spread rapidly and be extremely difficult to contain.

Eyewitnesses Speak Out

Local resident Simon Rowley, who witnessed the aftermath, described the scene:

“The home is completely, absolutely and totally destroyed. There is nothing left of the place.”

Community Mourning Loss of Historic Building

Before the blaze, the cottage was a well-known local landmark. A photo from July 2021, shared by The Ringwood Society, highlighted the property’s charm and heritage — making the loss even more heartbreaking for the community.

Investigation Continues

Hampshire Fire and Rescue confirmed that an investigation is now underway to establish how the fire began. Updates will be issued as more information becomes available.
