Firefighters, volunteers, support teams and members of the public were celebrated for their heroics at the Kent Fire and Rescue Service’s (KFRS) annual awards last night (4 December).

The ceremony applauded those who went above and beyond to save lives and support their communities—and recognised long-standing service within KFRS.

Father and Son Save Neighbour from Blaze

Among the night’s top heroes were Derek and Danny Brown, a father and son from Herne Bay. When a fire broke out at their neighbour Norman’s bungalow, they didn’t hesitate.

Norman, who was immobile due to multiple sclerosis, was trapped inside. Derek and Danny rushed into the smoke-filled home and, with help from others, carried Norman to safety.

Sadly, Norman later passed away from other health issues, but his sister Jackie paid tribute to the Browns. She said:

“Norman couldn’t believe people would risk their own lives to save his. Their selfless actions undoubtedly gave me more precious time with my brother, and I can never thank them enough for that.”

Other Brave Deeds Recognised

Another standout winner was Dan Fiveash, who jumped into the River Medway to rescue a drowning man while on shift at ASDA Living in Maidstone. Read his incredible story here.

Meanwhile, KFRS Crew Manager Michael Cramer scooped the Chief Executive Award for his work supporting Elenor Children’s Hospice. Michael and his team organised a special open day for 24 children from the hospice and their siblings, complete with medals and certificates in goodie bags.

KFRS Salutes 50+ for Long Service and Dedication

More than 50 brave and dedicated KFRS staff were honoured for their long service and unwavering commitment to keeping Kent and Medway safe.

Chief Executive Ann Millington praised all winners:

“Every person honoured at this year’s awards has shown compassion, kindness, and bravery to someone in need. They are exceptional people, and I congratulate everyone who received an award. Thank you for everything you do to help keep Kent and Medway safe.”
