Major blaze breaks out on Portsdown Hill near Portsmouth

Fire crews from across the county have been sent to tackle a fire that had broken out on Portsdown Hill on the outskirts of Portsmouth this evening blaze has started and spread in L and S waste management Portsdown Hill.  Thick black smoke can be seen as far as the Isle of Wight and covering parts of Fareham and Portchester. Fire crews are working with Hampshire Constabulary who are assessing the ongoing situation as the smoke may affect the M27 Motorway that remains open at present. Fire crews from Cosham, Havant, Southsea and Hayling Island have been called to the blaze this evening. A spokeswoman from Hampshire Fire and Rescue said that the call had come in at 6.50pm on Friday evening . She said that Fire crews are likely remain through the night and confirmed that an investigation would be held into the cause.
