A violent knife attack in Canterbury’s busy High Street has ended with a 13-year jail sentence. Mohammed Nour Hgar stabbed 23-year-old Samare Gerezgihir to death after a late-night brawl.
Deadly Fight on Canterbury High Street
The deadly clash happened just before 11.30pm on 10 October 2024. Hgar, who was armed with a knife, plunged it into the victim’s chest, causing catastrophic injuries.
Emergency crews rushed to the scene but couldn’t save Samare. He died in the early hours of 11 October.
CCTV Reveals Violent Confrontation
Police investigation showed Hgar came face-to-face with a group of men he knew before violence broke out. Although the exact motive remains unclear, it’s believed an ongoing conflict existed between Hgar and the victim.
After the stabbing, Hgar fled and tried to conceal himself by changing clothes. He was caught at 5am in Herne Bay, having taken a taxi out of the city centre.
Sentencing and Police Response
Charged with murder on 14 October, Hgar later admitted manslaughter on grounds of excessive self-defence, which was accepted by the court.
On 4 December 2025, Canterbury Crown Court sentenced him to 13 years behind bars.
Detective Inspector Colin McKeen said: “This sentencing reflects the severe consequences of carrying a knife. Our thoughts are with the victim’s family, who have shown immense strength during this trial. I hope this brings some justice and closure to all affected by this tragic event.”
