A SEPTA train carrying 350 passengers burst into flames in Ridley Park, just 16 miles from Philadelphia, on Thursday, prompting a full-scale emergency evacuation.

The fire was first reported underneath a Wilmington/Newark Line train near Ridley Park Station. Emergency services quickly responded as thick smoke and flames were seen coming from beneath one of the train’s six cars.
Passengers Safely Evacuated
All 350 passengers onboard were evacuated without injury, as firefighters worked to contain the flames and secure the area. Fire crews remained at the scene for over an hour to ensure the fire was fully extinguished and the area was safe.
Investigation Underway
The cause of the fire remains under investigation, and officials are working to determine whether mechanical failure, electrical issues, or other factors played a role in the incident.
Service Delays and Disruptions
The fire caused significant delays on the Wilmington/Newark Line, with SEPTA officials advising passengers to check for service updates before traveling.
Eyewitness Reports
Several passengers described seeing smoke and flames before being told to exit the train quickly.
“It was really scary—one moment we were riding as normal, and the next, we saw smoke filling the platform,” said one commuter.
Authorities Respond

Officials are urging anyone with additional information to contact SEPTA or local emergency services as the investigation continues.
