Thomas Morris locked up for hateful broadcasts

Thomas Morris, aka CodComedyTJ, a 25-year-old social media streamer from Middleton, has been jailed for spewing ‘truly and deeply shocking’ racist abuse online under the guise of comedy.

Racist rants streamed live to hundreds

  • Morris used a video chat site to connect randomly with strangers worldwide.
  • He launched vicious, explicitly racist tirades during these broadcasts.
  • The streams were then aired on another site, with thousands watching live.
  • Recordings were also shared on Telegram, spreading the vile content further.

Manchester Crown Court heard Morris used props, blackface makeup, wigs, and outfits to impersonate others. His vile abuse included frequent use of the n-word, mocking George Floyd’s death and dehumanising black people as ‘monkeys’.

Judge Nicholas Dean KC said: “This content was truly and deeply shocking. The broadcasts — described as comedy by Morris — were repugnant. The claim this was ‘just comedy’ is frankly absurd. No right-minded person would see any humour here.”

Racism mixed with disturbing indecency

Prosecutor Joe Allman revealed Morris targeted people by race, sexuality, and more using tags like Black Lives Matter and LGBTQ. More than 600 viewers tuned in to one broadcast to witness Morris spew hateful slurs and abusive behaviour.

In addition to the racial hatred charges, Morris also admitted posting an indecent image of a child — filming himself having sex with a 17-year-old girl and sharing it momentarily online.

Defence lawyer Nick Clarke stated: “Morris had a very difficult upbringing, losing his mother at 15 and living in foster care. His only prior job was as a social media manager, where he became skilled at IT.”

Judge slams ‘extremely serious conduct’

Judge Dean sentenced Morris to 47 months in prison, stressing the severe nature of his crimes. Morris pleaded guilty to:

  • Two counts of stirring up racial hatred.
  • One count of distributing an indecent image of a child.
  • One count of possessing an extreme pornographic image.

The judge firmly rejected Morris’s claims that the hateful content was intended as offensive ‘comedy.’

Morris admitted he pushed the ‘humour’ to the limit, but the court proved otherwise: his acts were nothing short of vile and hateful.
