A teenage boy has been arrested after hundreds of people swarmed the streets of Soho during an impromptu pop-up stunt that spiraled into chaos on Thursday, 22 February.
The Metropolitan Police were called at 12:09 PM following reports of a large crowd gathering across key Soho streets, including Dean Street, Marshall Street, and Broadwick Street. Videos circulating on TikTok revealed hordes of teenagers flocking to the area, drawn by a viral marketing stunt that had been heavily promoted online.
Police Respond with Dispersal Order Amid Growing Chaos
With the situation escalating, police imposed a Section 35 dispersal order across Westminster Borough, granting officers the power to remove individuals from the area for up to 48 hours to prevent further crime, disorder, and public alarm.
Despite efforts to manage the crowd, several incidents of anti-social behavior occurred. Online footage shows a group of teenagers jumping on an unattended police vehicle, damaging it, and some even donning police hats and hi-vis jackets left inside the car. One clip shows a group of youths laughing as they pose on the bonnet of the damaged vehicle.
Teenager Arrested and Investigation Underway
A boy, believed to be under 16, was arrested at the scene on suspicion of:
- Theft from a motor vehicle
- Criminal damage to a motor vehicle
- Affray
He remains in police custody as inquiries continue. Officers confirmed that no injuries were reported during the incident, but the scale of the gathering caused significant disruption to local businesses and pedestrians.
A spokesperson for the Metropolitan Police commented:
“We are aware of the widespread footage circulating online showing the large gathering in Soho. A dispersal order was swiftly put in place, and one arrest was made. We’re working to identify others involved in criminal damage and anti-social behavior. We urge anyone with information or footage to come forward.”
Heightened Patrols to Reassure Public
In response to the chaos, high-visibility patrols have been scheduled for the Soho area throughout the weekend to reassure the public and deter further gatherings. Businesses affected by the incident have expressed frustration, with one café owner on Dean Street telling UKNIP
“It was absolute mayhem. We had to shut our doors for safety as crowds spilled into the road. It felt really unsafe for a while.”
Concerns Over Viral Pop-Up Events
This incident highlights growing concerns about the role of social media platforms like TikTok in facilitating flash mobs and pop-up events without proper planning or safety measures. Westminster Council has called for tighter regulations and cooperation with social media companies to prevent future occurrences.
