A courageous firearms officer from West Midlands Police has been nominated for the prestigious National Police Bravery Awards 2024 for his heroic actions during a harrowing car crash rescue mission.
The officer, who has chosen to remain anonymous, demonstrated exceptional bravery and selflessness when he crawled beneath wreckage to rescue two elderly victims trapped beneath a vehicle following a traffic collision.
The incident unfolded on October 15, 2023, at the Dovecote Public House car park in West Bromwich. Upon arrival at the scene, the officer and three colleagues were met with a scene of chaos: a Vauxhall Insignia had struck two elderly females, ages 81 and 76, pinning them beneath the vehicle.
Despite the immediate danger and uncertainty surrounding the victims’ conditions, the officer wasted no time in springing into action. With the fire service working to lift the car and the victims’ breathing status unknown, he made the split-second decision to crawl under the rear of the vehicle, risking his own safety to save others.
Undeterred by the potential risk of collapse, the officer successfully rescued both injured women, pulling them to safety and assuming a leadership role in ensuring they received urgent medical attention.
The victims, though sustaining serious injuries, survived the ordeal, thanks to the officer’s quick thinking and courageous intervention.
Rich Cooke, Chair of the West Midlands Police Federation, expressed admiration for the officer’s remarkable bravery under immense stress, emphasizing his embodiment of the values of public service and courage.
Chief Superintendent Sarah Burton, head of operations at West Midlands Police, commended the officer’s courage and selflessness, highlighting his calm demeanor and decisive actions in the face of grave danger. She praised his unwavering commitment to protecting the lives of members of the public and his exemplary use of advanced first aid skills to administer life-saving care.
