Breaking: 100 Evacuated After Blast on Queens Road

A man has been rushed to hospital after a dramatic explosion rocked Wimbledon, London, near the train station.

What Happened?

The London Ambulance Service confirmed they were called at 10:06am on Monday, 17 November following reports of an explosion on Queens Road. Emergency teams including ambulance crews, hazardous area response officers, and paramedics were dispatched immediately.

A man suffering burns was treated at the scene and taken to hospital as a priority.

Chaos at Shopping Centre

The London Fire Brigade evacuated around 100 people from the nearby shopping centre after the blast. Two fire engines attended the scene to tackle the incident.

“I felt a huge shock wave through the place. Didn’t have any alarms go off or anything, and the next thing we know is we were evacuated,” said Tim Plummer, who was working in a co-working space inside the shopping centre during the explosion.

“There were three large fire engines and ambulances there. It came from the car park.”

Ongoing Disruptions and Official Response

  • The Wimbledon Quarter Shopping Centre has since reopened, though the car park remains closed for the day.
  • Local MP Paul Kohler described the explosion as “believed to be accidental” and thanked emergency services for their rapid response.
  • The Metropolitan Police confirmed the incident is not terror-related.
  • Queens Road is closed both ways between Princes Road and The Broadway. Councillors have advised people to avoid the area due to ongoing emergency services activity.
  • Bus route 200 is expected to face disruptions according to local authorities.
