Fourteen Kids Arrested After 14-Year-Old Dies in Gateshead Blaze
A horrendous tragedy unfolded at Fairfield Industrial Park in Gateshead when a 14-year-old boy fell through a burning roof. Fourteen children, aged 11 to 14, have now been arrested in connection with the incident.
Boy Falls Through Roof During Fire
The fire erupted at the disused industrial unit in Bill Quay on the evening of Friday, 2 May 2025. A group of boys and girls had been at the site when flames broke out. Among them, 14-year-old Layton Carr climbed onto the unstable roof.
Witnesses say Layton fell through the weakened structure into the inferno below as the others fled when police arrived. Emergency crews fought the blaze, but tragically, Layton’s body was later recovered during a search of the scene.
Police Detain 14 Young Suspects
Northumbria Police confirmed arrests of 11 boys and 3 girls on suspicion of manslaughter. All are between 11 and 14 years old and remain in custody while investigations continue.
Detective Chief Inspector Louise Jenkins called it a “deeply heartbreaking incident” and urged the public to respect Layton’s family’s privacy.
A heavy police cordon surrounds the industrial park as forensic teams comb the site. Authorities are appealing for witnesses or anyone with video footage to come forward to assist the investigation.
Community in Shock
The tragic event has sent shockwaves through Gateshead. Layton’s family is receiving support from specialist officers during this devastating time.
This heartbreaking case raises serious questions about the dangers of abandoned sites and the need to keep children safe.
