Camberley paedophile jailed for sex charged against young boys

A Camberley man who groomed and sexually assaulted two boys over a six year period in the 1990s is behind bars this week. Peter Chiverton, 53, of Upper College Ride, Camberley, was sentenced to nine and a half years’ imprisonment when he appeared at Guildford Crown Court yesterday (15 July). Chiverton was also placed on the sex offenders register for life after being found guilty of two counts of indecent assault on boys under the age of 16 and 14, as well as six counts of gross indecency with boys under the age of 14. An investigation was carried out after the victims came forward in 2015 to report the abuse they had suffered, with the offences taking place between 1990, when the victims were eight, and 1996. Writing in an impact statement, one of the victims said: “Many years have now passed since I was abused by Peter, yet I am still struggling to come to terms with what happened. “I tried hard not to think about it in the hope that memories of it would just go away. “I found it impossible to talk to others about it and so instead kept it to myself. “It has only been in recent years that I have properly started to open up at all and I hope that by finally coming forward I have ensured that others may not be abused by this man in the future.” Detective Constable Aodhan Lawrence, who was the officer in charge of the case, said: “I would like to commend the two men for having the bravery to come forward and report what happened to them. “They suffered a horrendous ordeal and had their innocence stolen from them by a man they thought they could trust. “I hope this sentence will provide them with some closure and allow them to begin to come to terms with what has happened. “I would urge anyone who believes they were the victim of sexual abuse, no matter how long ago it happened, to come forward and report it to us. “We will take your reports seriously and ensure they are thoroughly investigated.”
