In a high-profile trial at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court, a celebrity in his 40s faces charges of engaging in sexual acts with a 16-year-old girl. The accused, whose identity is protected for legal reasons, has pleaded not guilty to three counts of engaging in sexual acts with a minor between August and December 2010.
Prosecution Senior Counsel Eilis Brennan opened the case, explaining the charge of defilement of a child under the Criminal Law Sexual Offences Act of 2006. The complainant, 16 at the time, allegedly met the accused at a concert in 2010, where they exchanged contact information. The prosecution claims that on three occasions, the accused engaged in sexual acts with the underage girl.
Brennan emphasised the 11-year age gap, revealing that the complainant initially claimed to be 18 but later admitted to being 16. The prosecution asserts that the accused was aware of her age. The trial is expected to last four to five days.
During the proceedings, the complainant testified about meeting the defendant at a music festival, subsequent text messaging, and encounters at the accused’s workplace and home. She claimed they engaged in sexual acts after she revealed her real age, despite the defendant expressing concerns about the age difference.
Judge Pauline Codd warned the jury against media influence and prohibited internet searches to ensure a fair trial. The trial continues with the complainant’s testimony.
