A well-known celebrity in his 40s is on trial in Dublin, accused of having sexual encounters with a 16-year-old girl. The star, whose name is legally withheld, denies three counts of engaging in sexual acts with a minor between August and December 2010.
High-Profile Trial Opens in Dublin
Senior Counsel Eilis Brennan laid out the case at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court, charging the defendant with defilement under the Criminal Law Sexual Offences Act 2006. The alleged victim, 16 at the time, met the accused at a 2010 concert. They exchanged contact details, and the prosecution claims the pair met three times where sexual acts took place.
Age Gap and Allegations Under Spotlight
Brennan highlighted the significant 11-year age difference. The girl initially told the accused she was 18 but later admitted she was only 16. Prosecutors say the celebrity knew her true age when they engaged in sexual activity.
Complainant Speaks Out
The alleged victim described meeting the defendant at a music festival, texting after, and meeting at his workplace and home. She claims the encounters continued even after she revealed her real age, despite the defendant voicing concerns about their age gap.
Judge Issues Strict Warnings
Judge Pauline Codd warned the jury to avoid media reports and online searches to ensure a fair trial. The case is expected to last four to five days and continues with the complainant’s testimony.
