Environmental Advocate Voices Concerns to Ant & Dec
TV personality and environmentalist Chris Packham, residing in the New Forest, has openly criticized ITV’s Ant & Dec for what he perceives as ongoing animal abuse in the reality show “I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here!” The show, known for its Bush Tucker Trials, requires contestants to complete challenging tasks involving various creatures to win meals for their camp.
Show’s Compliance with Animal Welfare Laws
ITV, the broadcaster of the show, has affirmed its compliance with UK animal welfare laws and emphasized its adherence to rigorous production practices. These practices are designed to ensure the safe handling of animals before, during, and after filming.
Packham’s Strong Words on Social Media
Despite ITV’s statement, Packham, aged 61, expressed his disapproval of X (formerly known as Twitter). He labelled the show a “grotesque blot” on the reputations of the TV duo Ant & Dec. Packham criticized the show’s continued exploitation of animals for entertainment as being outdated and embarrassing, highlighting a disconnect between increasing environmental concerns and certain media practices.
RSPCA Complaints and Packham’s Suggestions
In his role outside of being the President of the RSPCA, Packham pointed out that the charity received 17,000 complaints last year concerning the abuse of animals for entertainment and reinforcement of negative stereotypes. He proposed a radical change for the show, suggesting elimination of animal abuse in 2024 and the introduction of an educational component focusing on wildlife conservation. He also recommended allocating a portion of the show’s profits to practical conservation efforts and suggested that Ant & Dec become ambassadors for wildlife charities.
A Call for Change in Entertainment
Packham’s letter concludes with a call for a shift in how entertainment programs approach wildlife, advocating for a more ethical and educational perspective. His appeal resonates with growing environmental awareness and the push for more responsible media representation of animals.
