Vitalie Tanga, a man described as “homophobic,” has been handed a life sentence for the savage beating and subsequent death of Alfred Mattox, a gay man, during a “vodka-fuelled” assault in the victim’s own home. The tragic incident occurred when Mr Mattox and his friends celebrated VE Day in Wolverhampton.
During the trial, prosecutors argued that Tanga unleashed a barrage of “explosive violence” on Mr. Mattox due to his sexual orientation. Tanga claimed that he was provoked by an alleged unwanted sexual advance from the victim, asserting that he wanted to “show him he was a man.
The defence contended that Tanga’s actions were merely a “violent reaction” to the perceived advance, emphasizing his intoxication at the time of the incident. Nevertheless, Tanga was found guilty of murder and assault occasioning actual bodily harm.
In delivering the sentence, Judge Michael Chambers KC condemned Tanga’s actions as a “brutal and sustained attack” that resulted in Mr Mattox’s death. The court heard how Mr Mattox suffered extensive fractures and brain damage as a result of Tanga repeatedly kicking him in the head.
The tragic events unfolded during a gathering to commemorate the end of World War II, with Mr Mattox and his friends consuming alcohol at his residence. Neighbours raised concerns after hearing disturbances, prompting police to respond to the scene.
Upon arrival, officers found Mr Mattox unconscious and critically injured. Despite medical efforts, he succumbed to his injuries two weeks later. Tanga, who initially prevented officers from entering the premises, was apprehended and later arrested.
During the trial, it was revealed that Tanga had a history of violence, and the court considered his actions to be aggravated by his hostility towards Mr. Mattox’s sexual orientation. Despite claims from the defence that Tanga’s actions were not motivated by homophobia, the judge ruled otherwise, citing the evidence presented.
As the sentencing was handed down, the courtroom heard how Tanga had previously experienced mental health issues, including a possible diagnosis of paranoid schizophrenia.
The case has drawn attention to the ongoing challenges faced by the LGBTQ+ community, highlighting the need for greater awareness and understanding to combat homophobia and discrimination in society.
