Homophobic Killer Jailed for Life After Brutal VE Day Beating

Vitalie Tanga has been jailed for life after viciously beating Alfred Mattox to death in a “vodka-fuelled” homophobic attack during VE Day celebrations in Wolverhampton. The savage assault happened at Mr Mattox’s own home while he and his friends were marking the historic occasion with drinks.

‘Explosive Violence’ Fueled by Hate

Prosecutors revealed Tanga launched an “explosive” and brutal attack on Mr Mattox simply because of his sexuality. During the trial, Tanga claimed he was provoked by an unwanted sexual advance and wanted to “show him he was a man.” But the court rejected this defence.

Despite his claim the assault was a “violent reaction” while intoxicated, Tanga was found guilty of murder and assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

Judge Denounces ‘Brutal and Sustained Attack’

Judge Michael Chambers KC condemned the attack as “brutal and sustained,” stating it caused Mr Mattox catastrophic injuries, including multiple fractures and severe brain damage from repeated kicks to the head.

Neighbours called police after hearing a disturbance at the property. Officers arrived to find Mr Mattox unconscious and critically injured. Despite emergency treatment, he died two weeks later. Tanga had initially blocked police entry but was eventually arrested.

History of Violence and Homophobic Motive

The court heard Tanga had a violent past and that his hatred for Mr Mattox’s sexual orientation was a key factor in the attack. The judge dismissed defence claims that homophobia was not a motive, citing strong evidence pointing to bias-driven violence.

Tanga’s mental health history, including possible paranoid schizophrenia, was noted during sentencing but did not lessen his responsibility.
