ITV to Air Shocking Essex Millionaire Murders Documentary
A gripping new documentary series is set to expose the chilling Essex murder case that rocked the nation. The Essex Millionaire Murders premieres next week on ITV, delving into the tragic deaths of Carol and Stephen Baxter.
Trusted Family Friend’s Deadly Deception
On 9 April 2023, Carol and Stephen Baxter were found dead in their West Mersea home, victims of a sinister plot by their close family friend, Luke D’Wit. Essex Police describe the investigation as one of their toughest ever, uncovering years of grooming and deceit.
D’Wit fooled the Baxters with fake personas — even posing as a doctor. Under the guise of a “liver cleanse,” he poisoned the couple with fentanyl, leading to their heartbreaking deaths in their own armchairs. Their devastated daughter, Ellena, discovered the scene and shares her emotional story in the documentary.
Exclusive Police Insight from Those Who Cracked the Case
- Detective Inspector Lydia George, Senior Investigating Officer
- DC Kerry Turner, Family Liaison Officer
- DC Emily Larkin, Medical Evidence Lead
- DC Reuben Brame, Digital Forensics Expert
These officers reveal the painstaking work that brought D’Wit to justice. In March 2024, he was sentenced to life in prison with a minimum of 37 years — one of Essex Police’s toughest sentences ever.
“Carol and Stephen were loving, generous people who had so much more life to live. Luke D’Wit took that away. He manipulated, deceived, and ultimately destroyed a family who trusted him. The significant sentence handed down reflects the danger he posed to those around him,” said DI Lydia George.
Spotting the Signs: Essex Police Spotlight Elder Abuse
The documentary also shines a light on elder abuse, a growing concern in the UK. Essex Police have teamed up with Hourglass, the nation’s only charity dedicated to helping older victims of abuse, to raise awareness and encourage the public to be vigilant.
They urge everyone to recognise the warning signs and understand that elder abuse transcends age and background.
