KP Snacks: Possibility of Peanut Shortage as Workers Threaten Strikes – UKNIP

Workers at KP Snacks, the only producer of KP Snacks in Rotherham, are considering strike action, raising concerns about a potential peanut shortage.

The Unite union has stated that pubs and supermarkets could be severely affected by the industrial action. They argue that while the company’s profits have increased by 275% since 2018, staff members are being “paid peanuts.”

Approximately 135 employees, including low-paid cleaners, will vote on whether to proceed with the strike this week. According to Unite, average pay at KP Snacks has fallen by 14% in real terms since 2018.

The current offer from the company includes a 6% pay rise and a one-off payment of £1,000. However, the lowest-paid cleaners, who earn £10.66 per hour, have been excluded from this pay offer.

Unite general secretary Sharon Graham criticized the exclusion of the lowest-paid workers from pay negotiations, calling it “corporate greed in action.” She emphasized that the workers have the full support of Unite, particularly considering KP Snacks’ £54 million profit.

Chris Rawlinson, Unite regional officer, stated that the members are determined to receive a fairer share of the company’s substantial profits. He called on the management to present a significant pay offer to the workforce.

The potential strike action and the threat of a peanut shortage raise concerns about the availability of KP Snacks products in pubs and supermarkets. The situation highlights the importance of fair wages and negotiations to maintain a harmonious working environment and prevent disruptions in the supply chain. Both parties will need to find a resolution to avoid any adverse impact on the industry and consumer access to KP Snacks products.
