Maidstone Shop Thieves Jailed Following River Medway Foot Chase

Two prolific shoplifters have been sentenced to jail after a dramatic foot chase in Maidstone led police to detain one of them near the River Medway.

Luke Ransome, 53, of Captain’s Close, Sutton Valence, and Lee Plant, 44, of West Park Road, Maidstone, stole nearly £300 worth of clothing from JD Sports in the town centre on Sunday, December 29, 2024. The pair fled the scene carrying several stolen coats, triggering an immediate police response.

Chase by the River Medway

Officers pursued the suspects, capturing Ransome along a towpath near Fremlin Walk. Despite managing to flee the scene, Plant was arrested the following day. Most of the stolen items were recovered during the investigation.

Court Appearance and Sentencing

Both men were charged with theft and appeared at Medway Magistrates’ Court on December 31, where they pleaded guilty. Ransome was sentenced to 31 weeks in prison, while Plant received a 15-week sentence.

Police Statement

Chief Inspector Steve Kent commented on the case, saying:

“Ransome and Plant are repeat and prolific thieves who cause significant harm to retailers. Their actions also subject retail staff to abuse, threats, and sometimes violence, simply for doing their job. I hope this swift justice demonstrates our commitment to protecting businesses and holding offenders accountable for their actions.”

The arrests and subsequent sentencing have been welcomed by local retailers, who have expressed relief at the swift action taken to address the persistent issue of shoplifting in the area.
