Man Charged with Four Counts of Attempted Murder Following Shaftesbury Avenue Incident

A 30-year-old man, Anthony Gilheaney, has been charged with multiple offenses, including four counts of attempted murder, following a violent attack on Shaftesbury Avenue in Central London during the early hours of Christmas Day.

Gilheaney faces additional charges of causing serious injury by driving whilst disqualified, dangerous driving, and possession of a bladed article in a public place. He was remanded into police custody and is set to appear at Westminster Magistrates Court today (December 27, 2024).

Incident and Arrest

Deputy Assistant Commissioner Stuart Cundy confirmed that the suspect was apprehended just minutes after the attack. “Since then, investigators have worked tirelessly to build the case and have today charged Anthony Gilheaney with four counts of attempted murder,” he said.

Victims’ Condition

One of the victims remains in critical condition and is receiving treatment in hospital. The condition of the other three victims has not been disclosed, but they are believed to be recovering.

Police Appeal

Authorities have extended their thoughts to the victims and their families during this difficult time. The investigation remains ongoing, and police are urging anyone with information related to the incident to come forward.
