Gary McVeigh, a 47-year-old man from Winsford, has been sentenced to two years and four months in prison after breaching his Sexual Harm Prevention Order (SHPO) by possessing nappies. The sentencing took place at Chester Crown Court on Friday, July 5.
McVeigh had previously been convicted of possessing and creating indecent images of children in August 2016, resulting in a two-year prison sentence. As part of his conviction, he was also subject to a Sexual Harm Prevention Order, which included several conditions. One of these conditions explicitly prohibited McVeigh from possessing any nappies.
On May 21, 2024, officers conducted a routine check at McVeigh’s address as part of their monitoring of registered sex offenders. During the visit, they discovered three unregistered devices hidden by McVeigh. Subsequently, McVeigh was arrested for breaching his SHPO.
A thorough inspection of McVeigh’s bedroom revealed a significant quantity of soiled nappies, along with unused ones. He was arrested again on suspicion of breaching his SHPO.
McVeigh faced three charges related to sexual harm breaches and later pleaded guilty to the offences.
Detective Constable Helen Wrigley accentuated the importance of monitoring offenders subject to Sexual Harm Prevention Orders. She stated, “As a registered sex offender, McVeigh was required to adhere to specific conditions aimed at preventing reoffending. Our officer discovered an advertisement for nappies on McVeigh’s mobile phone, leading us to believe he had resumed offending. The subsequent search of his home address confirmed the breach of his SHPO.”
Wrigley added, “This case underscores the effectiveness of monitoring sex offenders in the community and highlights the consequences when conditions are not followed. We remain committed to taking swift action when breaches occur.”
