A violent thug has been locked up after racially abusing a commuter and savagely attacking him with an axe at Edinburgh Waverley station.

Brian Patterson Jailed for Axe Attack

Brian Patterson, 22, from Brechin, landed a hefty four-year prison sentence with a two-year extension at Edinburgh High Court on Tuesday, 10 February. He admitted guilt to racially aggravated assault and endangering life with an axe back on 13 January.

Horrific Late-Night Assault at Waverley

The court heard Patterson stalked his victim and a friend through the busy station just before midnight on Friday, 5 September 2025. He launched into a barrage of racial slurs and made vile sexual comments targeting the victim’s companion.

As the victim headed for the escalator, Patterson closed in, reeking of booze and showing aggressive behaviour. When the victim tried to get away, Patterson whipped out an axe and struck him hard on the side of the head.
