The investigation into the tragic death of Leila Young, 33, in Bexley has taken a significant turn as a second man has been charged in connection with the incident.

Young was discovered injured on Penhill Road shortly after 4 pm on January 16. Despite efforts to save her, she succumbed to her injuries on the evening of January 23, prompting a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding her death.

Tony Curant, 33, residing on Penhill Road, was arrested on January 20 and initially charged with attempted murder before Young’s passing. Now, Richard Ray, 33, from St George’s Road in Swanley, faces charges of assisting an offender.

According to court documents, Ray is accused of aiding an offender’s travel and concealing evidence, specifically three mobile phones, on January 16. He is scheduled to appear at Woolwich Crown Court next week to answer to these charges.

Meanwhile, Curant made a virtual appearance at the Old Bailey on Monday (February 5) from HMP Thameside. Clad in a green t-shirt, he confirmed his identity and birth date during the proceedings.

Prosecutor William Emyln Jones KC informed the court that following Curant’s initial charge, Ms. Young passed away. The cause of death was determined to be stab wounds to her head and neck.

Given these developments, Mr. Emyln Jones indicated that the charges against Curant would be revised. Judge Philip Katz KC provisionally set a trial date for December 2024 and scheduled Curant to enter his pleas in April.

The community has rallied in support of Young, with floral tributes adorning the scene of the incident. Candles, bouquets of flowers, and heartfelt notes have been left in her memory, expressing condolences and sorrow over the tragic loss.

Among the tributes, one note reads: “So heartbreaking. I am so sorry this has happened to you. Sleep tight and may you rest in peace.” Another message honours Young’s memory as a loving and brilliant mother, vowing never to forget her.

The investigation into Leila Young’s death continues as authorities work to ensure justice for her and her loved ones.
