A prolific shoplifter with a long history of theft has been jailed for six months after stealing £320 worth of sweets and chocolate from two shops in Bexleyheath.
Ryan Brook, 35, of Cumbrian Avenue, appeared at Bexley Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday, 19 March, where he pleaded guilty to two counts of theft.
Despite being jailed again in June 2024, Brook was back offending within weeks of his release. By mid-July, he had stolen food and drink from Co-op in Bexleyheath, followed by £133 worth of alcohol from the Co-op in Sidcup in August, and £60 worth of meat from the Co-op in Bexleyheath in October.

Magistrates noted Brook’s persistent offending and the repetitive nature of his crimes when delivering their sentence.

The six-month custodial term reflects not only the value of the goods stolen, but also Brook’s failure to change his behaviour despite repeated interventions and previous prison time.
Retail staff and local residents have expressed frustration over recurring thefts, with some calling for tougher measures to protect shops from repeat offenders.
