Tree Surgeon’s Racist Rant Over £1,000 Payment Sparks Outrage in Eltham

Racial Abuse Erupts During Payment Row

A 31-year-old tree surgeon from Hornchurch sparked outrage after launching a vile racist tirade at a female client during a dispute over a £1,000 payment. Mathew McGrory, working in Eltham, called the woman a “f***ing mongrel” and a “dirty bald-headed lesbian” in a shocking outburst caught on tape by the client’s daughter, a court heard.

Verbal Assault Continues with Threats

Not content with the initial abuse, McGrory returned to the property to hurl further insults at the woman’s husband. He even threatened to dump rubbish on their driveway, escalating the harassment to a frightening level.

Criminal History and Court Outcome

McGrory attempted to deny the racist language during police interviews but later pleaded guilty to two counts of intentional harassment and one count of racially aggravated harassment. His worrying past includes 26 previous convictions, such as racially aggravated assault and threatening behaviour, and he was already serving a suspended sentence for burglary.

Despite this, the court was told a probation worker believed McGrory showed genuine remorse. Judge Steven Kovats KC handed down a five-month custodial sentence, suspended for two years, alongside 100 hours of unpaid work. The judge acknowledged that immediate prison time would cause McGrory to lose his job, affecting his family.

Zero Tolerance for Hate Crime

This ugly incident shines a harsh light on racially aggravated harassment, underlining society’s stance on hate crime. Perpetrators like McGrory will be held firmly to account to protect victims and send a clear message that such behaviour is unacceptable.
